â° Recommended duration: 3–3.5 hours
ð 4:30 PM – Arrive in Matlock Bath
Arrive 30 minutes early to find parking (there’s no on-site parking at the Heights — use the Station Car Park or Temple Road Car Park nearby).
Grab a quick warm drink or snack in one of the cafés or riverside stalls before walking to the Base Cable Car Station.
ð 5:00 PM – Cable Car Ascent
Check in and board your illuminated cable car for the magical ride up to the summit.
The views of Matlock Bath below — twinkling with lights — are beautiful at dusk.
Take a few photos mid-ride if you can!
ð 5:15 PM – Start the Light Trail
Begin your walk through the illuminated woodland and gardens.
Follow the path at your own pace (most visitors take 45–60 minutes).
Highlights to look out for:

ðĶĒ The Giant Swans on the pond
âïļ The Ice Garden
ðē The Colour Walk through glowing trees and sculptures
ðŠ Light reflections near the Tinker’s Shaft viewpoint
ð 6:00 PM – Summit Stop: Food & Warmth
Pause for a break at the summit’s Vista Bar and Restaurant.
Try their winter menu: wood-fired pizzas, hot chocolate, or mulled wine.
Or grab a snack from the Snap Tin Café (loaded chips, hot dogs, or sweet treats).
Relax by a fire pit or take in the views over the Derwent Valley.
ð 6:45 PM – Second Half of the Trail
Continue exploring any areas you missed earlier — there are interactive light displays and great photo spots around the Victoria Prospect Tower.
Visit the gift shop before descending — they have unique local crafts and souvenirs.
ð 7:15 PM – Descend by Cable Car
Enjoy your return cable car ride — the view of the valley illuminated below is stunning at night.
You’ll arrive back at the base station around 7:30 PM.
ðĒ 7:30 PM – Optional: Explore Matlock Bath
Take a short stroll along the riverside lights or stop for dessert or a drink at a nearby pub (like The Midland or The Fishpond).

Dress warmly and wear good shoes (paths are steep and uneven).
Bring a charged phone/camera — great photo ops throughout!
Allow 3–3.5 hours total for the full experience.
The last entry is usually 7 PM, so you’re right in the perfect window for seeing the lights at their best.
